A nutritionist, Hajiya Jumai Hassan, at the Wuse General Hospital, Abuja, on Monday, advised diabetic patients to eat healthy foods to prevent more complications. Hassan told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja ,that eating healthy foods was important to help in controlling their blood glucose. “Good management of diabetics include healthy eating, staying active and taking their medication as prescribed. “Diabetics should ensure to eat breakfast; as it improves a good start for the day. “To control your blood glucose, you will need to eat healthy foods and may also need to take pills for insulin,” said the expert. Hassan also advised that consumption of more vegetables would help the body, saying that they are high in nutrients and low in calories.
“Choose starchy foods such as, whole grain bread and cereals, rice or potatoes as energy meal. “Starchy foods are broken down into glucose, which your body needs for energy, including fish, lean meat, egg or vegetarian protein choices as part of your meal. “Have a glass of milk and a piece of fruit to complete your meal,” said Hassan. Besides, the nutritionist advised against the consumption of alcohol, saying that it affects blood glucose levels and could cause one to gain weight. Hassan said that for meat and alternatives, “one should choose an amount up to the size of the palms of one’s hands and the thickness of your little fingers. “Any diabetics’ patient should avoid alcohol and maintain healthy diet, the type of diet explained earlier may not be applicable in all cases as people differ,” she said.
