I have a confession to make: I am an ex-smoker. I quit five years ago this month and it still ranks as one of the hardest things I''ve ever accomplished. I quit because we were trying to have a baby. Nine months later, I finally got successfully knocked up (apparently I had to give birth to myself as a nonsmoker first). And craved cigarettes like I hadn’t since the initial Trainspotting-like detox from smoking – so thank goodness I didn’t have to count on pregnancy to receive me to quit. And if

SHAMELESSNESS IS not a problem for pop critics. Quite the opposite: It’s a everyday practice. Invented by maverick newspaper staffers (most notably, Ralph J. Gleason at the San Francisco Chronicle) who stayed out later and never came into the authority, codified by freaks and attitudinal New Journalists, the pursuit of passionate thought about pop music rose up as a challenge to mouthful hierarchies, and has remained a pugilistic, exhibitionist business sector throughout pop’s possess evolution.

I can assure you that the pathetic fallacy occurs only within the pages of fictional narrative. If ever I’ve had something truly unpleasant to do, it has always taken place in lovely weather. My appointment was for 9am on a Monday morning and I left at twenty to eight because getting across town in rush hour traffic is an unpredictable business. Naturally it was not long past eight as I came in sight of Addenbrooks hospital, a collection of towering buildings that every give the impression of ha

Desperate to have a baby girl? Well you might think about relocating. Or eating more marine animals. Researchers have discovered several towns where women are only giving birth to girls. The gender balance is totally out of whack and something like a 2 to 1 ratio of boys to girls. Where are these towns of rainbows and ponies and sparkles and every Hannah Montana every the time? They are Arctic communities up in northern Greenland. What''s causing this. Most likely, PCBs. Here''s an excerpt of an in

So, the last time I blogged I said that I''d be back. I insinuated that I would not be a stranger on this here blog, that I had a lot to say/share. I lied. Obviously. It''s not that there hasn''t been a lot going on - things worth sharing. Oh, there has. The thing is, I tend to go into close down mode quite frequently. It''s either close down and cease communicating or spew it every out on this blog. Once upon a time that would have been my first go to (after talking to Daniel) but since I made that bo

My last post regarding the three young doctors who crowded into the exam room for my breast biopsy yesterday got me thinking. More specifically, it got me thinking about age. I was unembarrassed by the presence of two extra young men during what was a rather intimate procedure. We’re taught from a very young age not to expose certain parts of our body in public and in particular, to the opposite sex, unless we’re legal adults in private circumstances – and preferably married, as well. That ear

CHAPTER TWO

I''m not going to say I wanted to die. That would be over-simplification. What I will say is, I didn''t particularly want to live. So you might say I was passively suicidal that summer. The Summer Of Suicide. It sounds like the name of the hottest band on college radio. But that''s what it was. I was seeing a shrink at the time, which was a pretty big step for me. It was a desperation move -- a Hail Mary pass (pun very much intended) that started a few months before the breakup. Mary had to
